Lightening and dark clouds in the distance over a town During storms keep your eyes to the sky. Call SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor, 970-353-1388 if you experience storm damage.

Summertime brings thunderstorms in Colorado. Thunderstorms are defined as storms that produce thunder and lightning. Severe thunderstorms may also produce:

  • Rain
  • High winds
  • Sleet or snow

It’s important to note that thunderstorms do not always produce moisture. A storm in which you see lightning and hear thunder but never feel a drop of water is known as a “dry” thunderstorm. Thunderstorms that produce hail and tornadoes are known as “supercell” storms. Storms occur either in clusters or lines; therefore, they may present as a single thunderstorm or as multiple thunderstorms hitting one after the other.

Thunderstorm causes

Thunderstorms are caused when moisture from the lower or mid-level part of the atmosphere mixes with warm, unstable air from the ground. Moisture and air then push upwards into the higher atmosphere to form clouds that produce thunder and lightning, as well as potential precipitation. Spring, summer and fall are most conducive to thunderstorms because the sun heats the ground and moisture is more perceptible in the air, especially in humid climates.

Thunderstorms must also be lifted to begin their formation. Some sources of lift include:

  • More heat on the ground than in the air
  • Changes in atmospheric conditions near mountains
  • Weather front changes caused by clashing cold and hot air
  • Drylines, or when moist and dry air clash
  • Land or sea breezes

Any of these situations can immediately create a thunderstorm without warning, even in the middle of a clear blue day. In many cases, these storms will also be accompanied by lightning. Most will not come with hail or tornadoes but can if they occur in tornado-prone states i.e., Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri.

Safe Roof Snow Removal

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

Pictures of a group of homes, with snow on the roofs Always be safe with snow removal on roofs.

Snow on your roof can lead to leaks, mildew buildup in your attic, and damage to your gutters. It has been a mild winter so far but we at SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor know it is not over just yet. Pay attention to the following three tips for safe roof snow removal.

  1. Stay at ground level if possible. If it is a wet snow, you can assume it is slippery. Better to stay closer to the ground.
  2. Don’t let snow pile too high, remove as much as you can. Falling ice or a buildup of snow can be dangerous. The weight of the snow on your roof can also result in water leaks.
  3. Use a plastic shovel. They are lightweight, flexible, and easy to handle. Snow is also less likely to stick to a plastic blade.

If you experience water damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor at 970-353-1388.  Our trained technicians are eager and ready to help you with all your mitigation needs.

Preparing for Power Outages

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Background is a lightning storm with the 10 common causes of power outages listed Planning for power outages relieves a lot of stress and panic when you loss power.

Power outages can range from mildly inconvenient to a crisis depending on the severity of the cause and the amount of time an area goes without power. However, when it comes to preparation, you are anything but powerless.

Invest in flashlights or portable lights that stick on the wall for every major room in the house, and keep them in accessible areas such as:

  • Nightstands
  • Kitchen drawers
  • Bathroom cabinets
  • Entertainment centers

Make sure you have the appropriate back-up batteries for each portable light or flashlight. For rooms where you’ll want to be more hands-free, like the bathroom, choose battery operated portable lights that stick on the wall.  Many people choose to use candles, if that’s your choice, keep a supply of matches in a cool, dry place. Place candles away from flammable materials like curtains and furniture. Keep all candles and matches out of reach of young children and pets.

Once the power comes back on, your home may experience a surge of electricity, which can harm your electrical appliances. If the power goes out, unplug all your valuable electronics—especially TVs, laptops, phones, microwaves, etc.

Important tip:  Check your devices and outlets for scorch marks before turning them on after a power outage.

You’ll need at least two quarts of water stored for each person every day. However, it’s better to have a gallon. Remember to rotate your water storage as needed.

Include a couple of buckets in your emergency supply. You can fill your bathtubs full of water from the tap immediately as the power goes out and use buckets to flush toilets, depending on your type of pump, without using your drinking water supply.

Maintain a supply of non-perishable foods that don’t require a lot of cooking. Try to have at least a three-to-five-day supply of food your family will want to eat. Make sure you have manual can and bottle openers.

Your refrigerator, if full, should stay cool for around 24 hours if you keep it closed. A full freezer may last up to 48 hours.

Keep your pets in mind while gathering supplies. Make sure you have food and water for them as well.

Prepare First Aid Kits and Medicine

If you have any medications you need to keep cool, invest in an ice cooler. Make sure you have ice on hand to keep it cold. You can use coolers to keep some of your perishable food cold as well.

Either buy or put together first aid kits. The Red Cross provides a good guide on what to include. Don’t forget any medications specific to your family’s needs.

Charge Your Communication Devices

Your cell phone can be your connection to valuable information during an outage, but it is useless if it runs out of battery. Invest in a car charger as well as a solar or crank-powered charger. You won’t regret having a few options.

You may also want to invest in a battery-, solar-, or crank-powered radio in case you don’t have cell service during an emergency. Don’t forget to keep extra batteries around.

Keep a list of utility numbers to contact during an emergency.

Power outages can be stressful, but proper preparation can help keep you safer and more comfortable. If your home or property is damaged during a storm or outage, call SERVPRO® of Greeley/Windsor to make your home “Like it never even happened.”

We are 24/7/365 emergency service.  One of our employees answers our phones which puts our technicians onsite faster.   Call SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor at 970-353-1388

What Is The Purpose Of A Sump Pump

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Water running into a sump pump pit in the basement of a building. Sump pumps are a small investment that can save property owners money in repairs.

A question lot of homeowners ask is, what is a sump pump.  A sump pump is a submersible device installed in a sump pit dug at the lowest point of your house, such as the basement or crawl space. This small but important addition to your home helps prevent your basement from flooding.

Here is how it works: Most of the time, the pump is on standby, simply waiting until it is needed. However, when it begins to rain heavily, the soil around your house becomes oversaturated. Excess groundwater funnels toward the sump pit, and it begins to fill with water. This activates the sump pump float switch and turns on the pump.

By removing water from the pit and draining it into a nearby storm drain, dry well, or detention pond, the sump pump prevents the groundwater from rising to the level of your basement floor, which could cause a flood.

Benefits of a sump pump.

A sump pump is a small investment with big advantages. Here is how you can benefit from adding a sump pump to your home:

  • Defend your basement against flooding
  • Protect the paint and other wall coverings from peeling
  • Safeguard basement appliances—such as the washer, dryer, and spare freezer—from corrosion
  • Reduce mold, mildew, and fungus growth
  • Discourage termites and other insect invasions
  • Improve indoor air quality
  • Keep your foundation intact
  • Make the basement drier and more comfortable year-round
  • Enjoy peace of mind, no matter what the weather is doing
  • Meet a requirement for homeowner’s insurance coverage of basement flood damage

Do I need a sump pump?

While the benefits of sump pumps are clear, some properties need these devices more than others. We recommend installing a sump pump if any of the following is true:

  • You live in a climate that receives heavy rain or snow. Here in the west, we usually get our fair share of moisture. Unlike desert climates in the southwest, basements here are very susceptible to flooding.
  • Your home is built on a flood-prone plot. Poorly draining soil, low-lying properties, and homes surrounded by hills are more likely to experience rising groundwater levels during heavy rains, snowstorms, and spring runoff.
  • You have had water problems in the past. If your basement has flooded before, or you regularly struggle with high basement moisture levels, it would be wise to install a sump pump.
  • You have a finished basement. Even if your home isn’t categorized as a high-risk property, consider protecting your underground living space with an affordable sump pump.

If you experience flooding in your basement call SERVPRO Greeley/Windsor 970-353-1388.

Have a plan for winter storms

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

It’s that time of the year. Freezing temps, biting winds, and shoveling snow. Winter storms can wreak havoc in many ways. Some of the biggest risks for homeowners in the winter months stem from burst pipes causing water damage or the hazards that come with extended loss of power.

How to be prepared:

  • Have an emergency plan in place with members of your household.
  • Keep a stock of non-perishable food available should a power outage occur.
  • Know where flashlights and extra batteries are located.
  • Prepare an emergency road kid for your vehicle with items like a flashlight, blankets, bottle of water, non-perishable food.

Coverage You Will Get From Commercial Storm Insurance

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

Three commercial buildings that sustained tornado damage Storm Damage to commercial property in Windsor, CO

When you own a commercial building, the last thing you want is a disaster to strike and cause damage to the facility. This could lead to costly repairs and restoration. It could also hamper your business and keep the building unoccupied for the long term. Storm damage can wreak havoc, resulting in flooding and structural damage. If you purchase storm insurance, you can get the financial support you need during a difficult time. This coverage can also protect your valuable assets.

What The Insurance Won't Cover

It is first important to understand what your regular policy won't cover. For these issues, you will need to buy supplemental coverage. Such events include the following:

  • Earthquakes
  • Flooding from sewer backups
  • Flooding from a main water line burst

Hail Damage
Your commercial insurance coverage will pay on your claim for damage your building suffers during a hailstorm. This may include broken windows and siding, roof leaks, ruined personal items, or other related problems. If you live in an area in Greeley or Windsor, CO, where hail is common, you may need to rely on this insurance. This coverage applies to damage that occurs to the interior or exterior of the building.

Tornadoes
In certain parts of the country, a tornado can rage across the land, destroying everything in its path. Your commercial building could be a victim of this devastation. Luckily, storm insurance will pay for the damage your building suffers in such an event. This would include rebuilding and restoring the structure and replacing equipment and supplies inside.

Wind Damage
It doesn’t take a tornado to harm your facility. High winds can cause severe problems with your roof or even knock over trees onto the structure. Your storm coverage should take care of any issues resulting from a windstorm.

Along with calling a mitigation/restoration cleanup company, you should notify your storm insurance agent if an unfortunate event occurs in your building. Storm Insurance coverage can give you peace of mind.

Severe Storm - Safety Tips For A Portable Generator

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

Portable Generator Keep your home running through a storm with the help of a portable generator.

Are you getting ready for the Spring storms to arrive in the Greeley/Windsor area?  Power outages are a common occurrence during a severe storm and a portable generator is a great tool to help through the power outage.  If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather storms, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:

Never use a generator, grill or camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.

To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.

Opening doors or windows and using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can’t be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death.

Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.

Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

Be sure to turn the generator off and let it cool down before refueling.  Gasoline spilled on the hot engine parts could ignite.

IF you experience storm or water damage caused by a power outage in your home, call SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor at 970-353-1388.  We answer our phones 24/7/365 which puts us faster onsite to your loss.

Four Ways for Businesses To Prepare for a Storm

Main street flooded with water and water going inside businesses To get your business up and running faster after you have experienced storm damage - Call SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor

Business owners of Greeley, Windsor and surrounding areas may experience fear and anxiety upon becoming aware of an impending storm. Receiving notification beforehand (via radio stations, TV news channels, and smartphone apps) can allow time to get prepared. Here are four precautions to take to keep your commercial property safe during severe conditions.

Prepare Your Office Building

Ensure that your office building is well insulated and that all air leaks are sealed with weather stripping. Water heaters and HVAC systems should be up to date on maintenance and inspection. Have a backup source of energy in the event of a power outage.

Create a Plan

It is essential that everyone has a hard copy of a disaster and emergency plan. Have an evacuation route with a designated meeting area. List locations of emergency generators, fire extinguishers, and emergency kits.

Have an Inclement Weather Policy in Place

Some companies have a hotline for employees to call to get up-to-date instructions on what to do during inclement weather, which can inform employees to either come in later after the weather clears or to not report to work. Often, employers often allow employees to work from home during a storm.

Know Who To Contact if Damage Occurs

If any cleaning and/or mitigation is needed after the storm, contact your local damage restoration specialists. Bringing in a skilled team with the right equipment and know-how can ensure that the property will be restored to pre condition before the storm.

Weather can temporarily close down a business. Have a storm damage plan in place – and a restoration company on call – to deal with any problems that may arise that you will need to get taken care of to get your business back up and running.

Are You Prepared for Snowmelt Flooding?

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

Cars driving on a flooded street in a residential area. Snowmelt in Greeley can cause flood damage in your Greeley Home.

As the seasons change in Colorado, melting snow can cause flood damage in your home. This winter’s weather in Colorado has brought us above average snow fall. If your home is positioned at the bottom of a hill or a slope, the chances of flood damage for your home grow significantly, as gravity dictates that the water would flow downward. Most homes in these situations have defenses for this, such as sump pumps laid in their basement to redirect snowmelt-waters away from the house. However, sometimes, defense mechanisms can fail.

Calling for help as soon as you find the flood damage in your Greeley basement is best. Unfortunately, the flood damage in your home can come from a sump pump failure, causing puddles of water to form around the drain. In severe cases, it can flood the entire floor in your basement. The reason why it is essential to call for help, as soon as you can, is because leaving water-based damage for any length of time can lead to secondary damage, such as mold, developing in your home. Furthermore, allowing more damages to develop only makes the problem more expensive to solve. Dealing with it quickly ensures the least expensive option and avoiding secondary damage.

Flooding: #1 Natural Hazard in The United States

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

A basement is flooded with 5-6" water, with furniture floating If you experience flooding call SERVPRO Greeley/Windsor.

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Studies show there is a 26 percent chance of experiencing a flood during the life of a 30-year mortgage, compared to a four percent chance of fire.

Flash floods result from intense storms dropping large amounts of rain within a brief period and they occur with little or no warning and can reach full peak in a few minutes. They also move at very fast speeds and can roll boulders, tear out trees, destroy buildings, and obliterate bridges.  Walls of water can reach heights of 10 to 20 feet. (Source: Federal Emergency Management Agency - www.fema.gov)

 Causes of flooding include:

  • Heavy rains, winter storms, and spring thaws bring flooding to river basins.
  • Overburdened or clogged drainage systems lead to property damage both within and outside floodplains.
  • Construction and new development affect natural drainage and create new flood risks.

It is important to understand your risk and take appropriate steps to prepare by making an emergency plan for meeting up with loved ones, storing fresh water in the event of water supply contamination, having fresh batteries on hand in case of power outages, and stockpiling non-perishable food.

If water has entered a structure through outside flooding, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered black water and could be hazardous to your health.

If you home or business is affected by a flood, call SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor at 970-353-1388.

Tornado Safety

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of a house depicting safety steps in the event of a tornado: Get In, Get Down, Cover Up In the event of a tornado warning in your area make sure family members know these steps!

With the possibility of crazy weather approaching this spring it is always better to be prepared and know how to stay safe ahead of time. Below are some tips from the American Red Cross on the best ways to stay safe during a tornado.

Top Tips

  • Identify a safe place in your home where household members and pets will gather during a tornado: a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
  • In a high-rise building, pick a hallway in the center of the building. You may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor.
  • In a mobile home, choose a safe place in a nearby sturdy building. If your mobile home park has a designated shelter, make it your safe place. NO mobile home, no matter how it is configured, is safe in a tornado.

Know the Difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning!

    • A tornado WATCH means a tornado is possible.
    • A tornado WARNING means a tornado is already occurring or will occur soon. GO TO YOUR SAFE PLACE IMMEDIATELY.

What Is The Difference Between Storm Water vs. Water Damage Cleanup

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

A home that is surrounded by flood waters When dealing with Category 3 water damage, the best approach is to contact a flood damage restoration company as soon as possible.

Storms, flooding, and leaks can all damage your home. While water is the source of the damage in all of these situations, the major difference is the category of water involved. Below is listed the three categories of water damage and how cleanup varies between the different categories.

  • Category 1 water is clean and treated. A burst supply pipe is the most common source.
  • Category 2 water is also known as gray water. This water may contain bacteria or chemicals but not sewage or solid waste.
  • Category 3 water is sometimes referred to as black water. Black water is the most common type involved in flooding and is highly contaminated. Sewage loss would also be considered black water loss.

The cleanup procedures for these categories of water damage vary with each category.

Category 1 Cleanup

The water involved in a Category 1 leak is clean and treated. Since bacteria is not a concern, the only cleanup procedures necessary involve eliminating any standing water and thoroughly drying the affected area. You may still want to rely on fans and dehumidifiers to dry the area more quickly and prevent mold from forming.

Category 2 Cleanup

Category 2 cleanup should involve cleaning and disinfection as well as thorough drying. This type of backup or leak is not as severe as damage from a flood or sewer backup.

Category 3 Cleanup

Floods and severe sewage backups involve black water containing solid waste. Cleaning and disinfection are necessary to limit infection risks, and the area must be completely dried to prevent mold.

When dealing with Category 1 damage, the best approach is to quickly eliminate water and moisture that may lead to mold. Most flooding and storm damage cleanup are Category 3 - black water and requires cleaning and disinfection in addition to drying. Resolve any situation as soon as possible by contacting a flood damage restoration company in the Greeley/Windsor area.

Snow Melt and Flooding, Are You Prepared?

1/29/2020 (Permalink)

A local street with water caused by snow melting running down the streets and into residential areas. If your neighborhood looks like this and your have water running into your home, call SERVPRO we can help.

Typically, you don’t think of floods in the middle of winter. But they do exist and happen more than you think. Snowmelt flooding happens when there is a quick change in temperature change. The temperature change can cause snow to melt and could potentially flood your basement. Basements flooding during the winter are mostly caused by melting snow entering the home because of faulty gutters, cracks in foundations and improper runoff.

As an example, ten inches of snow can melt into one inch of water and it is already on soil, unlike rain. Obviously, the heavier snowfall, the more snowmelt. A quick temperature change can cause a significant amount of water on the soil around your home. If the water cannot flow away from your home’s foundation, it can ultimately enter your home.

Snowmelt flooding can damage the floors, walls, furniture and personal items in your basement. It also introduces potential water damage and mold in your basement as well.

Snowmelt Safety Tips:

  • Shovel snow away from your home.
  • Keep snow and ice buildup off drainage areas.
  • Inspect basement walls for cracks
  • Check your roof for ice and snow buildup.
  • Inspect your gutters and downspouts.
  • Clear snow from your roof to prevent buildups.

If you experience damage in your basement from snowmelt, SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor can make it “Like it Never Happened”. Our services to help restore a basement after flooding include:

  • Water Removal and Dehumidification
  • Mold Mitigation and Remediation
  • Move Outs and Contents Restoration

Prepare Your Business for Winter Storm Damage

10/29/2019 (Permalink)

Preparing your business for Winter Storm Damage A winter storm in Greeley, CO can be a stressful event for any business owner.

When a winter storm is threatening your business, your first priority will be preparing the building to withstand any damage the weather will bring. But it’s also important to develop a restoration plan in the event of any effects from snow, and ice.. By keeping a few simple guidelines in mind as you brace for the destruction of a storm, you can ensure your business in the Greeley/Windsor, will be up and running again after bad weather passes.

1. Check your plumbing. A pipe break as the result of frozen water in your plumbing system can cause catastrophic flooding. To avoid this, conduct a thorough check of your business before the storm hits and seal off any drafts or cracks in the walls and roof that can allow cold air to leak in, causing a temperature drop. Be sure to shut off all plumbing during a winter weather event to prevent frozen water from accumulating inside pipes.

2. Develop a snow and ice removal plan. Heavy snow and ice that lingers on the roof of your building can cause a dangerous collapse, and dirty snow piled in front of your business will repel customers and potentially increase the risk of liability claims due to slip and falls. Make sure you’re contracted with a reliable snow removal service before a winter storm hits so you can minimize its effects and reopen your business as soon as possible.

3. Maintain an inventory. If the worst happen and your business sustains storm damage, you’ll need to submit records of all assets to your insurance company for coverage. Keeping detailed inventory will streamline the claims process while you work to repair the building. Our professional storm restoration company can assist you in the cleanup process so you can recover as many assets as possible.

A winter storm can be a stressful event for any business owner. By taking the proper steps both before and after a winter weather event, you can protect and restore your building from damage.

Four Things That May Happen During Restoration

10/24/2019 (Permalink)

Storm remediation requires onsite personnel to assess the damage. Because a storm can cause such a wide range of damage to your building, it is hard to know exactly what the storm restoration process will entail.

When your commercial building in Greeley, CO, is affected by a storm, you may have to go through a long process to get back to normal. Understanding the storm remediation process can make this ordeal feel easier to handle because you know what to expect. While each commercial remediation team may have a slightly different approach, it is common for the following to happen. 1. Removal of Water: If standing water fills any part of your commercial building, it has to be removed before the repairs can take place. Professionals may come in and start drying out your property by sucking standing water out with a special vacuum. If this important step is bypassed, it may be hard to address any of the other problems.

  1. Tear Out of Building Materials: Some building materials cannot get dry by normal methods, so they must be removed completely from the building. This often happens with flooring, drywall and other porous materials.
  2. Removal of Moisture: Once the standing water has been taken care of, the excess moisture needs to be addressed. If this is allowed to stay, you may have to deal with mold growth in the future. To address the issue, your restoration team may remove and clean wet belongings, incorporate dehumidifiers and tear out drywall to allow the space between the walls to dry.
  3. Restoration of Building: After the water issues have been addressed, your building has to be returned to normal. Water damage can affect large portions of your property, so the restoration could take a while. You may have to restore company equipment, the roofing system, structural components and business furnishings. Because a storm can cause such a wide range of damage to your building, it is hard to know exactly what the storm restoration process will entail. When flooding is caused, your remediation experts may have to tear out building materials and make your property worse before they can start fixing the underlying issues. Be Prepared for Severe Weather Season in Colorado

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

Severe Weather

Springtime in the Rockies means we all have to be prepared for severe weather when it strikes. Follow these tips provided by the Colorado Office of Emergency Management:

  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Identify a safe shelter location – a basement is best, followed by interior rooms on the lowest level of the building away from windows.  Mobile homes are often unsafe in a tornado – identify a neighbor's house or public shelter where you can go if a tornado warning is issued.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage during a storm.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment before the storm arrives.
  • Obtain a NOAA Weather Radio (Midland WR120 Noaa Weather...) to receive alerts about impending severe weather.
  • Sign up for reverse telephone alerts (Emergency Alert Sign Up) for your county, and don’t forget to include your cell phone.
  • Make sure you have sufficient insurance coverage – including flood insurance, which is separate from your homeowners or renter’s policy.
  • Photograph or take video footage of the contents in your home in case you need to file a claim after a disaster.
  • Store copies of your important documents in another location, such as a bank safe deposit box.

Be Prepared For Colorado Spring and Summer Storms

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Be alert of severe weather in your area.

Living in Colorado we have green grass, colorful flowers, relaxing rain showers and distant, whispering rumbles of thunder. Consider the notes below, Coloradoans, and take safe steps when dangerous weather is predicted for the Greeley/Windsor area.

Tornadoes- Spring can be the peak season for tornado activity. Tornadoes occur mostly on warm days between 3:00 and 9:00 p.m. However, tornadoes can occur anywhere, at any time of the year, at any time of the day.

The Red Cross has safety steps people should take now to be ready if a tornado warning is issued for someone’s neighborhood:

  • Download the free Red Cross tornado app for mobile devices. The tornado app puts everything you need to know to stay safe in a tornado at your fingertips. The app can be downloaded from the iTunes or Google Play stores by searching for American Red Cross.
  • Know your community’s warning system.
  • Pick a safe room in your home where family members can gather if a tornado is headed your way. This should be a basement, storm cellar or interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
  • Prepare for strong winds by removing diseased and damaged limbs from trees.
  • Move or secure lawn furniture, trash cans, hanging plants or anything else that can be picked up by the wind and become a projectile.
  • Know the tornado danger signs – dark, often greenish clouds, a wall cloud, cloud of debris, large hail, a funnel cloud or a roaring noise.  The Red Cross has steps you can take if a thunderstorm is predicted for your area:
  • Thunderstorms- Thunderstorms are most likely to happen during the afternoons and evenings. However, like tornadoes, they can happen anywhere, at any hour of the day. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people every year that tornadoes or hurricanes.
  • If thunder roars, go indoors. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be in danger from lightning.
  • Watch for storm signs like darkening skies, flashes of lightning or increasing winds. Postpone any outdoor activities. Many people who are struck by lightning are not where it is raining.
  • Take shelter in a substantial building or a vehicle with the windows closed. Shutter windows and close outside doors securely. Stay away from windows.
  • Do not take a bath, shower or use plumbing.Flooding- Spring can be a time of the year for flooding in Colorado. Snow melt and heavy spring rains fill rivers and streams and flooding can occur. Flash floods occur suddenly when water rises rapidly along a stream or low-lying area. People should be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice and head for higher ground when a flood or flash flood warning is issued.
  • Other safety steps include:
  • If you are outside or driving, there are things you should do to remain safe. Information can be found with the following link discussing what to do before, during and after a thunderstorm.
  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
  • Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

How Storms May Affect Your Home or Business

How Storms May Affect Your Home or Business

Are you aware how storms can or may affect your home or business? When hearing about a storm approaching your area, a storm may call for high winds, rain, hail and/or snow. When you look at storms and what they consist of, you may wonder how it will or can affect your home or business.

Trees near your home can get weakened by age or storms causing branches to bend and possibly break. This can cause damage to your home or roof. If you look at your trees and see branches that may need trimmed or cut out, contact a local company and have them assess your trees.

If you notice or are aware of a leak in your roof or windows, rain, hail or snow can find their way in through these spots and cause water damage to the inside of your home or business. Get these areas taken care of before water damage occurs.

Your chimney can become packed with debris creating a blockage and they are a great place for animals to build their nest creating a bigger problem. Have your chimney cleaned out before spring rains or hail season in preparation for the stormy season.

Springtime and Floods

Local flooded trailer park .

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river, or even in the desert – there is always potential for flood damage. Fema.gov reports in the last 5 years, 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods so just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past does not mean you won’t in the future. In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to $27,000.00*

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

Here are a few tips of what you should do if your house or business floods:

Safety:

  • Shut off the power. Water and electricity do not mix.
  • Wear protective clothing, rubber boots and gloves, if you enter the home
  • NEVER eat food that has been contaminated by flood waters or has sat in a refrigerator or cabinets for an extended period of time.
  • Thoroughly wash any dishes before using; as these items may have come into contact with the flood waters that could contain harmful chemicals.

Clean Gutters in The Spring

3/14/2018 (Permalink)

With spring approaching and summer storms directly behind it make sure you have done the preventative care outside your home to prevent water intruding in your home. It is so common that most property owners keep up the essential housekeeping for the inside of the home, but often neglect the outside! Spring is a good time to clean those gutters. The fall remnants of leaves have many times filled those gutters so that heavy rains will overflow the gutters filling up those window wells. Remember, water takes the path of least resistance, so water ends up entering you property through the window well, creating water damage in your home.

Summer rains can bring high damaging winds that can dislodge branches from trees. So, it’s essential that after every troublesome storm, an inspection to your rain gutters is performed. It is simple enough - all you will need is a ladder, gloves, protective goggles, water hose and a scoop. L

Cleaning your gutters can be performed in these three easy steps:

Climb the ladder and start scooping! Start from the end closest to the drain outlet and remove any debris with your scoop, working away from the drain outlet. For faster cleanup in the end, toss the offending material into a bucket on the ground.

With your water hose in tow, spray a steady stream of water through the gutters towards the drain outlet. This is much easier using a hose with a pressure gauge for high and low power, but any will work just as well.

Check your drainpipes for any blockages. Hopefully any potential blocks are minimized by scooping out the debris before it makes it into the pipes. However, there are instances where the rain storms forced material into the pipes. If you see a trickle instead of a flow coming from your pipes, use the hose at the top of the gutter and spray directly into the outlet. For harder to reach items, try a plumber’s snake.

Use these quick and easy tips to ensure your rain gutters are ready for any storms Mother Nature wants to throw your way.

Thanks to HomeTips.com!

Planning for Emergencies

3/14/2018 (Permalink)

Emergencies usually come when people least expect it. Being prepared with the proper supplies that may be needed during an emergency or disaster can ease a lot of the instant stress. Most people do not have an emergency plan because they think it will never happen to them. The following steps can aide you in the event of a disaster or emergency:

Staying Informed

It is important to understand the type of emergencies that may likely hit your area. Natural disasters like tornadoes and floods can cause not only water damage, but also fire and/or smoke damage. Staying informed about the imminent danger may be the difference between staying alive or dying.

During an emergency or disaster, it is important to have a communication device such as a radio, a cell phone, or even a battery operated TV. These devices will allow you to communicate or receive vital information and updates from local authorities in the event of a disaster. For example, if there is a tornado in your area, authorities will likely inform you of the path, areas hit, or about to be hit, and when it is safe to come out if you have taken cover.

After identifying the disasters that are likely to occur in your region, do research and learn mitigation procedures to prevent additional stress. For instance, if your area is likely to experience tornadoes, plan where family members or co-workers should go for safety until the tornado passes. If floods are a possibility, learn water damage tips that can assist with minimizing damage.  Have a reputable company’s (SERVPRO of GREELEY/WINDSOR) contact info readily available in an Emergency Kit.

Chaos and unrest are an inevitable in the event of a disaster or emergency. People may get hurt in the commotion, so make sure at least two members of your family/business are familiar with first aid treatment and CPR.

Make a plan with your family, friends and/or co-workers

It is vital that you prepare a plan with your loved ones and/or co-workers in anticipation for disaster. During disaster preparation, the first step is to understand available options. Everyone should have/carry emergency contact information in writing or on their cell phone.   If you have children, their school and/or daycare should also have this emergency contact information.  We recommend practice runs and drills to assess your preparedness for an emergency and/or disaster.

Have an Emergency Kit

In large part, being prepared means having the right kits and tools to face disaster, having the essential supplies on hand, and ready, will increase your chances of survival. Make sure your emergency kit is easily accessible at home or work to avoid wasting time in the case of an actual emergency. You should pack the following items in the emergency kit:

  • Water and food – disaster brings a shortage of food and water. It is, therefore, important to have non-perishable food and adequate water to sustain your family.
  • Emergency Contacts – store emergency cards in the emergency kit and if possible in your wallet and/or purse.
  • First aid kit and medication – these will come in handy in case someone is hurt during emergencies.
  • Personal documentation – always carry identification documents in the event of a disaster to help with the identification process.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries – they will help illuminate at night
  • Extra cash – it is not possible to be 100% prepared for disaster, therefore, having extra money will help purchase additional personal survival materials you may need.

Spring Storms Are Coming

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

Local home affected from severe storm

Spring is coming and so is the chance of severe thunder and rain storms. Since most Colorado homes have basements the risk of having flooding issues in your basement is a pretty common issue for many homeowners. Rainstorms, melting snow, cracks in foundation walls, improper grading, broken appliances and plumbing leaks all have an opportunity to cause a variety of problems.   If your basement is prone to flooding issues, you should have a plan in place and have a contact for a mitigation company that you trust will help you keep the damage to your home as minimal as possible.

Does your property have landscaping issues or is the proper grading to direct water away from your foundation in place? If you have had previous water damage from the fore mentioned two items, you may want to assess your needs to prevent any future water damage such as would you benefit from the installation of a sump pump with power backups, backflow valves, or additional drainage. Combining efforts with backflow valves and optimized drainage can ensure water problems do not get out of control.

Maintenance issues such as cleaning your gutters or adjusting the position of your downspouts are a big help during heavy thunder or rain storms. If you have water damage from outside water, it is not suggested that you take care of the water loss yourself as the water could contain a variety of hazards that present additional risks you are unaware of, that you could easily spread throughout your home without knowing it, causing harm to you or your family. Not to mention the possibility of fines associated with dumping wastewater or contaminated materials illegally.

SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor certified technicians are waiting to assist you in the event of a storm emergency. For trusted service call SERVPRO of Greeley/Windsor 970-353-1388. We will make it “Like it never even happened.”

Be prepared for bad weather

April showers don’t always bring May flowers. Springtime in the Rockies means we all have to be prepared for any type of weather at any time.

According to NOAA, every year, Americans are forced to cope with: 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods or flash floods, 1,000 tornadoes, and 2 land-falling deadly hurricanes. As a result, there are around 500 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage.

Don’t wait for a severe weather event to prepare. Form plans, build an emergency kit, and keep you, your family, and your home safe during this unpredictable weather season.
